Three things to cook in a fire ring
Bannock on a stick, fish in newspaper and the warden's apple, all with what the honesty fridge holds.
A fire ring isn’t a barbecue. Let the fire burn down for forty minutes until you have a bed of embers, then cook on those, not on the flames.
Bannock on a stick
Mix two cups of flour, a spoon of baking powder, a pinch of salt and enough water for a soft dough. Roll it into a snake, wind it around a green stick and turn it slowly over the embers until it sounds hollow when you tap it.
Fish in newspaper
Season a cleaned fish with butter, lemon and dill, wrap it in three layers of wet newspaper and lay it in the embers. When the paper is dry and starting to char, about fifteen minutes, it’s done. The skin comes away with the paper.
The warden’s apple
Core an apple, fill it with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon, wrap it in foil and push it into the edge of the embers for twenty minutes. Eat it from the foil with a spoon, standing up, while the fire dies down.
